WHAT IS ALOPECIA AREATA?

Updated: Nov 21, 2019

If you have noticed a lot of extra hair on your pillow, brush, or shower drain, or you’ve noticed odd little bald spots in the mirror, you might have an autoimmune disorder called alopecia areata.

In fact, it affects as many as 6.8 million people in the U.S. with a lifetime risk of 2.1%.

People of all ages, both sexes, and all ethnic groups can develop alopecia areata. It often first appears during childhood and can be different for everyone who has it.

This really brought a whole new level of appreciation and gratitude for my hair. You don't realize how lucky you are till you learn about something that affects so many.

When you have an autoimmune disease, your immune system attacks your own body. With alopecia areata, it’s the hair follicles that are attacked. This causes the hair to come out, often in clumps the size and shape of a quarter. The amount of hair loss is different in everyone. Some people lose it only in a few spots. Others lose a lot.

It’s rare, but you can lose all the hair on your head (alopecia areata totalis) or entire body (alopecia areata universalis). I have known two people personally who have traveled this journey.

Symptoms of alopecia areata may include:

Small, round (or oval) patches of hair loss on the scalp, beard area of the face or other areas of the body with hair

Hair loss and regrowth at the same time in different areas of the body

Significant hair loss in a very short period of time

Hair loss that’s mostly on one side of the scalp, instead of both sides

“Exclamation point” hairs that are narrow at the base/next to the scalp

“Stippling” or “Pitting” (rows of tiny dents) on the fingernails

Each case of alopecia areata is different. Sometimes, hair grows back but falls out again later. In others, hair grows back for good.

If you think you do have alopecia areata, you may want to see a dermatologist.

Is There A Cure?

Alopecia areata can’t be cured. But it can be treated and hair can grow back. If you have it, there are several things to try.

Depending on which type of alopecia areata you or your child has, your age, and the extent of hair loss, there are a variety of treatment options available for disrupting or distracting the immune attack and/or stimulating the hair follicle.

I want to share some testimonies with you. I want to share where there may be hope for your hair to grow back and with an all-natural approach doing something we do already every day. Wash our hair! As with anything I am not starting this works for everyone, but who am I not to share something that is working for so many!

So I have Alopecia Areata and started using Monat in October 2017. I did for a couple of months then stopped because I just didn’t think it was working. So I used it again then in June 2018 I noticed my spots were filling in and now 6 months later I could honestly go wig free. I’ve had Alopecia since I was 8 years and have worn a wig since I was 10. Now I am 23 years old and my hair is finally starting to grow! I have been using the IRT shampoo and spray but is there anything else other Alopecia customers are using? I still can’t believe this!

Super embarrassing...... these pictures show the progression of alopecia. During these last almost 6 months I went from a full head of hair to hardly any on the right side. I saw a dermatologist for scalp injections (ouch) oral steroids and steroid cream for my hair. The spot just got bigger with each treatment. So I made the decision to break up with my doctor; at this point as a hairdresser, I felt I could do better than what he was doing for my hair. The last 3 photos are 4 consistent weeks of Monat Black, Smoothing Conditioner, IRT Spray, and general scalp stimulation! Monat 1 - Doctor 0 Consistency is key when using Monat. I would still have a huge bald patch the size of my palm without it!

Bye bye alopecia, thanks to monat
I have suffered with alopecia for 5 years now and thought I would share what has helped me. In January 2017 I was introduced to Monat and all I can say is WOW! Monat has boosted my confidence, grown my hair, made my hair softer and healthier.

Diagnosed with alopecia in March 2018. We stopped all topical steroids in Dec 2018. We started going to the chiropractor every 3-4 weeks in Jan 2019 and started Monat’s Junior Line & IRT spray in February 2019. She also takes Zyrtec since the beginning. This is the most growth we’ve had since diagnosis and the longest she has gone without any new loss. Zero patches!

We are coming up on our 2 year anniversary since starting Monat hair products exclusively. My daughter is my inspiration..... my Why. She was completely bald for 2 years after being diagnosed with Alopecia Universalis and with the help of naturopath doctors, good supplements and Monat.... she has 95% of her hair back! With Alopecia being an autoimmune disease, it can start attacking those hair follicles at any given moment.... but we are consistent with the IRT spray. That stuff is magic in a bottle!! Don't know what we'd do without these incredible products!! We have seen so many others have success too... so she's not a "rare" case. So thankful we were introduced to Monat!! Lifechanging products <3
Products used: Classic Confidence System and Intense Repair System
